Colour Halftones - Using the "Pattern" - "Make" method

Guys really frustrating thing about Illustrator is watching tutorials online.....They say hit Pattern and Make and it will repeat the pattern between a small circle to larger....

Mine illustrator for some reason now brings up a totally different layer on the document and pattern options to which none of them actually achieve this....HELP WTF is going on?!
