Question

Colours appearing much duller in Illustrator

Whenever I import an image to Adobe Illustrator, it always reads the colours as duller/more washed out than they actually are:

However, I don't have the same problem with Photoshop:

Both of these are in RGB colour mode, but switching to CMYK doesn't help either.

These are my colour settings in Illustrator:

Is there any setting that I've accidentally toggled that's led to this problem? As far as I can tell, it's the same as the factory default but I'm not too sure. Any advice will help, I asked my instructor at university and they're as stumped as I am.

Thanks

In Photoshop as well as in Illustrator, you can check the document color profile at the bottom of your document window. Check if they are the same as your RGB working space.

I also noticed that you have a 16 bits image which will be converted to 8 bits in Illustrator.

I can't find the Show> Document Color Profile menu you have in your image, but the document color mode is set to RGB as well

You can select it at the bottom of your document window where it by default shows you what probably already know; which tool you are using.

So the photos are RGB images and your Illustrator documents are as well?

Do the photos have a color profile embedded?

Your color management does not have the warnings turned on. Please check all the boxes.

You do use File > Place or drag the photo from the Finder, right? You do not Copy and paste from Photoshop?

Also: Apple Preview and other Image Viewers probably do not tell you the truth about color.

Yes, both of them are RGB

This is also an issue with CMYK though, anything and everything I import into Illustrator is off colour-wise

I've turned the colour warnings on + yes I just drag and drop from Finder. The fact that image viewers may have slightly different colour settings doesn't explain why it shows up as the same in Photoshop and differently in Illustrator though, even with Adobe Bridge making it so that my color setting preferences are synced across both applications

Which color profile is it?

Have you turned on the soft proof?
