Combining shapes

I'm trying to combine this circle and this line, but no matter what I try to do with the shipbuilder tool, they will not combine. Here are the steps I'm taking now. I shift click both items, then I select the shape building tool while they are highlighted. I drag across the two shapes, but the do not combine. If I alt click across the circle disappears all together. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
