Compond paths no longer working as a mask in Illustrator 27.7

I am looking for clues about why the method I have used for eons -Masking with Compond paths no longer working as a mask in Illustrator 27.7. I am using a united compound path over a secondary item ( either a jpeg or a united vector object and am not getting the masking result-the mask just turns transparent. Would love advice on how to complete this essential task in 27.7.

I am not sure what you mean by "united compound path".

If it contains multiple compound paths it must be combined in a single compound path.

But maybe it is better if you show something with an expanded Layers panel.
