Convert Black Obejects over Black to White (partial)

Hi,

i was hoping somebody knows the answer to my Problem. I searched a long time but was not able to find something. Thank you very much for your effort!

I have black linework on one layer and on the other black shadow. I am trying to get the linework in the area of the shadow white and at the area where no shadow is it should still be black. Is this possible? and if so how? I was hoping for something like a blending mode but i did not find something.

In the end it should look like this (i did it with Photoshop just to show you, but i need it in Illustrator):

There are a couple of ways to do that. They all depend on how exactly the drawing is constructed.

For example, the following technique works in many cases, but not in all cases. It's a sample file in AI CS 5 format.

Which version of Illustrator are you using? Can you share your sample file (in AI CS 5 format, please)?

That is what i was searching for, but i do not get it to be honest!

Kurt has applied Pathfinder - Exclude to a layer's appearance.
