Illustrator files  (up to version CC2019) can be imported into CorelDRAW. It doesn't even need to PDF for that.

 

But of course since CorelDRAW does things differently you will lose some ediing capabilities (effects, brushes and such), things will look differently (text or gradient meshes), some things might be converted to pixels (freeform gradients) or even get lost completely (I have not yet seen it, but it's possible).

I tried opening a simple AI file and CorelDRAW 2019 froze up each time I tried. I saved the AI file as an EPS and it opened quickly. The gradient mesh on the "nose" turning into a large number of individual objects. Another option that I did not try was saving the AI file to an older version.
