Converting Gray into an opacity of white in Illustrator

Hello

I'm trying to turn this image trace into a brush stroke:

However it seems to have trouble adapting to color because I believe of the gray areas. This does not seem to be the case when I make a stroke in which the gray color is an opacity of black.

So is there any way to simply convert gray into an opacity of black?
