Coordinates change based on grouping?

If one has rulers set to artboards, and uses specific coordinates to place something say at x:10 and y:10, those coordinates will change based on other objects being grouped with them. Something that is 50px wide versus another that is say 100px wide. Makes sense; group them and the obejct to the furthest left will register the x coordinate in the info palette.

However, when entering isolation mode, each object will now register at different coordinates from what they were before being grouped, even when they haven't moved.

 

Unless one moves the x/y point, the top left is always 0/0 so why would, from an artboards top left pov, object get moved by grouping but then going into isolation mode?

The o/o point is top left unless you specifically change it. Whether Global or artboard. Why are individual objects being moved from their set points based on if they are grouped....but when in isolation mode?

In addition to what Ton said, you can try to copy the artwork to a new document. You can try in one go and see if it behaves, and failing that you can try to copy it in parts (maybe starting with half the groups) and start over if needed, maybe finding that a certain part of the artwork needs to be redone.

 

I believe it may also be worth spending time on a cleanup, to save time later and improve the artwork.

    Yes, that's what I've been doing. Multipage documents should really be done within InDesign. Turning off the pdf compatibliity made it much faster when saving and opening, but I've definitely re-cut some teeth in this document!

    Which version of Illustrator are you using? I cannot replicate your problem.

    Artboard with Artboard rulers, group at set coordinates, double click to isolate, no change.

    27.5, the latest on Windows 11. It could be the actual document. It was inherited, 14 artboards and..one layer. Multitude of clipping groups w/in clipping groups..clip paths for embedded (and not sized down and cropped first) images etc.

    I was wondering if there was some setting or a weird bug where rulers benig changed from mm/cm to pixels to inches etc multiple times throughout production could have somewhow messed things up.

    Isolation is nice but when one has 30+ groups with clipping paths, both grouped and ungrouped objects in the same clipped group, even isolation does little to sooth the pain of a 'willy-neely' build!

    If you cannot repeat it in a new document, it must be that specific document. Does not sound like a lot of fun.
