Question

Copy and link art to multiple artboards

I have to build products packaging with three distinct designs. I have created three art boards and copied the artwork created on the first art board to all three. However, all the art still lives in the layers on the first art board. I need to separate the art into three distinct layers with sublayers for UV treatment, Foil, and die lines etc. I have tried to cut and paste into the art board but it completely destroys the layers hierarchy and puts everything into one layer. Can someone help?

Layers palette flyout >> paste remembers layers >> Checked

Turn that on and when you paste the elements  layers will be remembered, when pasting. Otherwise they will go onto the selected layer

No, the opposite is true, Mike.

Paste Remembers Layers has to be turned off.

We may be interpreting the post differently. Either way the original poster should investigate paste remembers layers.

I at first believed  same as yourself until I got to the end:

completely destroys the layers hierarchy and puts everything into one layer

Then I also thought Illustrator by default has that setting the opposite of what the packaging design world prefers. Apologies in advance if I misunderstood the post.

You may try:

- Select all on artboard 1

- Copy

- Create a new Layer

- Disable the Paste Remembers Layers option in the Layers Palette flyout menu

- Paste
