Copy multiple artboards with content from one AI file to another

So I have two documents, each has about 300 artboards each. Each artboard has a layer with the graphic that is on this artboard. Now I need to combine these into one document - how do I copy 300 artboards with their contents into another document, ideally also preserving the layer structure?

- Activate the Artboard tool in one of the documents.
- Select all artboards (Cmd-A).
- Copy (Cmd-C).
- Make sure "Paste Remembers Layers" is turned on in the Layers palette flyout menu.
- Switch to the target document.
- Paste (Cmd-V).
