Copy/Paste Bug — Old Text Keeps Reappearing When Pasting from Point Text to Area Text

Hi all,
I’m running into a really frustrating issue in Illustrator and hoping someone can help or confirm if this is a bug.

Whenever I copy text from a Point Type object and paste it into an Area Type text box, Illustrator pastes the correct text but also includes a chunk of old text from something I copied dozens of attempts ago. This old text repeats infinitely inside the Area Type box. It just keeps duplicating itself over and over, flooding the box.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far (none of these have worked):

  • Restarting Illustrator and my computer

  • Creating a brand new file

  • Pasting into a plain text editor first (like Notepad or TextEdit) to strip formatting

  • Using Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + V to paste in place

  • Clearing out overset text and checking for threading

  • Manually clearing windows clipboard

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling Illustrator

Despite all that, the moment I paste into an Area Type box, that old text comes back. It doesn’t happen when pasting into a Point Type box, only Area Type.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there a deeper cache I can clear, or is this a known bug?

Thanks in advance!

Hello @januarytran,

I'm sorry to hear you're having similar trouble with Illustrator. Would you mind trying to run Illustrator under Safe Mode (Windows / macOS) and checking if it helps?
If the problem persists, kindly confirm the version of the OS/Illustrator installed, and if this happens with all files, along with a small screen recording of the problem, so we can better assist you.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Anubhav

THere are a couple of apps that interfere with Illustrators clipboard.

If you have any of this, you could be affected.

  • Parallels Toolbox running with the Clipboard History
  • LogoTech Keyboard management software
  • TeamVewer Clipboard > Use Shared Clipboard
  • Apple iOS device simulator from Xcode
  • Windows Multi-clipboard
  • Windows Clipboard History
  • Clippy
  • Chrome Remote Desktop
  • Mouse Pointer Highlighter
  • AnyViewer
  • Pastebot app
  • Overzealous antivirus (Digital Guardian) as well as viruses that empty the clipboard
  • Vector Magic

I just tried on macOS 15.5 and Illustrator 29.6.1 and cannot confirm this behavior.

Can you please tell us your operating system and your Illustrator version? If possible try to make a screen to show the issue.

Here is a description on how to do this on Windows: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/learning-center/how-to-record-screen-windows-11
And on a Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102618
