Crashing when switching programs

Hello! Little issue with illustrator currently. It opens up fine, working well. But as soon as I switch program, say to copy some text over, it just stops working. I can still switch between it and other programs but no buttons work and the file is basically frozen.

An suggestions? I'm all up to day so far I know I'm terms of software.
