Creating a PSD from an ai file

Hello!  I am trying to import an ai file into Photoshop.  I need to create a PSD file as well as others.  I have tried dragging the ai file into the new window I created in PS, but it will not let me.  I am using CS3, and yes, I know it's old, but it does everything else.  This is a class project, and I am a very beginner.  What am I doing wrong?

You can copy the Illustrator artwork to the clipboard and paste it directly into a Photoshop document. Photoshop will let you paste the artwork as pixels, a smart object or as vector-based paths (which reside in Photoshop's paths palette). The paths palette will allow you to select individual paths and turn them into selections. I think it's a pretty great feature.

In past versions of Illustrator and Photoshop I've sometimes had to check Illustrator's preferences for File Handling and Clipboard. Under Illustrator CC 2018 and Photoshop CC 2018 I don't need to have "AICB" checked on. That may vary for older versions.

The Ai file needs to be saved with PDF compatibility for this to work
