Creating Outline of Image text and Straightening it

I would like to be able to straighten out an image of a font that I have sketched. What would be the most efficient way of doing so? One of the tutorials asks for me to create an outline, however, on my Illustrator the "create outline" button is greyed out. How would I fix this?

Since you said this is an image,

open in photoshop
pull guides out of rules to align with reads you want straight
then use perspective distort or one of the other distortion tool

please post a screenshot if you need more help as many people like myself usually do not answer posts unless you put in enough effort into showing us the problem. We have no idea where your image came from, is it a picture taken with your cellphone of some sign, or a screenshot????

If you are familiar with the Pen Tool (P) in Illustrator, you can use it using the sketched image as a guide to recreate the shape in Illustrator, allowing you to adjust it to your preferences.
