Creating unique lettering

Having just seen the word Experience on the adobe.com website in what likes like bent metal strips I was wondering if anyone could suggest how this might be accomplished in Illustrator?

Are there any examples of this technique that is already available that I was unable to find?

looks like it was made on 3D software

for example in SketchUp:

from a single line path, with a rectangle extruded along that using the Follow Me tool,

then the view set to Iso and the Camera to Parallel Projection

In illustrator I guess you would draw a series of extruded isometric rectangles and join them with shape builder tool and manually draw the curves in.
