"Cropping" in Illustrator

How does one "crop" an image in illustrator? I have this image, I'd like to convert it a square shape.

I thought I could just draw a square rectangle over the top of it (no fill, no stroke) and use either the "divide" or "crop" functions in Pathfinder, but that doesn't work. I end up with some of the paths divided and some not, so I have no easy way to clear away all stuff that don't want to be there.

Here is a link to the original file.

Marie had mentioned that "Crop" did not work for her.  Marie, did you remember to select All?

Pathfinder panel > Crop worked fine for me.

Yes.  Forgot about "Crop".  Does a nice job.

Try isolating the elements by color.  In your case, select the yellows and move them off the artboard ( first setup where you want the square to crop, when you do the yellow move, copy the square to go with it and leave the original square ).  Now, do your Pathfinder > Diviide on each color ( one op for the Blacks, one op for the yellows ).  Then, move the yellow colored elements back to their original position after you've deleted all of the elements you do not want in the file.  Remember to always do these types of operations on a copy of the original file so you can always go back if you have to.
