CS6 Linking from server

Hi, so at work we have all our photos on a server that we use, and I have been linking files for several monthts now but recently everytime I place or link in any other way the links are marked as missing.

these images are maximum 1mb, usually smaller.

why would illustrator stop recognizing these images on our server?

So is there anyway to package linked files in a folder like in InDesign do my coworkers can work on the document at another point in time?

Because only one desktop being able to work on documents at one location doesn't really work at my job
