Cut out transparent logo from another image

Hi Everyone!

I am seriously struggling with how to properly use path finder or even a clipping mask (or not?) to cut the shape of our our logo out of another shape.

I need the shape to actually be transparent for printing purposes, not just change the color of the logo to the background.

I have attached an image of what I am trying to do, we need the black YMCA logo to be transparent cut out of the teal heart cardiogram.

PLEASE HELP!

Hi,

convert the black YMCA logo into a compound path

then select both the two shapes: YMCA and the light blue hart > pathfinder > EXCLUDE (shape modes)

Help me make sense of your post. You need to cut your own logo out of a larger graphic? You don't already have a stand-alone graphic of your own logo?

If you mean you need a "hole" in the heart that's the shape of your logo, select all the parts of the logo and choose Object > Compound Path > Make. Then, with the logo and the heart shape selected, click Pathfinder > Minus Front.

Hi John!

I got very excited about your response, but unfortunately it is not making the hole we hoped for.

There heart file is an EPS. Do I need to trace it and create a new shape before taking your steps?

I tried rasterizing it and then following your steps and this is what happened:
