cuting out incomplete portions of pattern

Im making a design where theres a backdop of a repeated symbol, I created a pattern. But i want the pattern to cut out incomplete symbols intead of filling the entire area. Its hard to explain but the second file pasted in here is the kind of affect I want, I acheved the second one my making a shape and dodging the logos that would be incomplete (as you would imagine it got old quick).
