Data Merge Languages in Illustrator: Korean, Japanese & Greek

I'm creating a large quantity of packaging with a bunch of international languages in Illustrator using the Data merge function. When I import the file the languages Greek, Japanese and Korean only show up as a bunch of question marks (?) in place of their characters. I have tried saving both .CSV (comma delimited) and Text (tab-delimited) file types from Excel but neither work. The only solution at this point it to manually input the languages after merging and update the dataset.

Excel must save in Unicode format.

I tried that using the following steps, still question marks are appearing after :

- Choose File->Save as from the menu.
- In the 'Save as type' dropdown > select 'Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt)'
- Select 'Web Options' in the 'Tools...' dropdown at the bottom of the dialog box.
- Select the 'Encoding' tab.
- In the 'Save this document as:' dropdown, select 'Unicode (UTF-8)'

Are there any additional settings I should be clicking?

Have you tried assigning a different font to the languates that have question marks? It sounds like the particular font you are trying to use may not have those characters available.

Yeah I've assigned specific fonts for each of the 3 different languages in the Illustrator master file. The text turns into question marks once I've imported the Data Set... I wonder if it has something to do with the file type/script between the Excel and Illustrator import?
