Question

Deleting backgrounds of an imported image

I have watched multiple videos on removing a background in an image that I've created in another software and opened as a new document.  I did not place it. Any suggestions? Even doing a live trace has been an option but I have perfected this image for my logo and dont want to ruin it.

It would be beneficial for you if you included the image in your post.  Very difficult to recommend anything without seeing the image and having more information.  That said, I would not recommend using an image in a logo unless your plan is to convert the image to vector.  Based on what I've read so far, it is really unclear.

i placed the image as well as opening it up in ai, i used image trace expand and clicked on the background and can't remove it.  I tried to use the pen tool to retrace it but I don't want to change the image.  I also need to clean it up somehow with the smooth tool.  Any help would be helfpul.  Someone posted using an image editing program but doesn't ai do that?

Yes.

Then the options you have is edit it in Photoshop or similar and save as psd or png.

Or Live Trace in Illustrator with the options given above.

Or Redraw it with the Pen tool in Illustrator.

You can use an image editing program to remove the background of an image.
