Design Program Help

Hi all, I am working on a logo file. I want the "D" in Fund to have the fork in the middle as negative space. I want that to be apart of the letter so the fork space will take the background color of whatever it is in front of. How do I delete the parts of the "D" so that the opening looks like the fork?

I found some workarounds in photoshop which is my native program but I want to make this the best quality possible. Any insight would be really appreciated.

Is your artwork vector-based? Or is the graphic a pixel-based image you brought over from Photoshop? If the artwork is vector-based the fork can be cut thru the "D" shape using Pathfinder commands.
