Question

Diagonal line pattern fill

Hello,

I'm hoping to create a 45 degree line pattern. I want to put this pattern into any shape.

I've been able to create the pattern, but when I put the pattern into a new shape, I only get these little squares of the pattern that are duplicated throughout the shape. This is not what I'm trying to achieve - I would like the pattern throughout the whole shape. No little squares of the pattern.

I've tried following multiple YouTube tutorials and several articles, but I can't figure this out.

Can anyone help? Thanks!

The easiest way, create a horizontal or vertical line pattern with the Pattern tool or use one of the pattern library from the Swatches panel and rotate only the pattern.

Here's one way to create the striped pattern:

  1. Draw a line with the Line Segment tool
  2. Set its stroke width
  3. Set its stroke color
  4. Make multiple copies of the line
  5. Distribute them if you want them to be equidistant (use the Align panel or Smart Guides)
  6. With all the lines selected (you can group them if you want), rotate them 45°
  7. Go to Object > Pattern > Make (it'll add a swatch, but you can still edit it)
  8. Keep the Tile Type set to Grid
  9. Make sure that you can see the copies in the Pattern Options dialog (Dim Copies to 70% is fine)
  10. Resize the lines so that they connect to the copies
  11. Add lines in the middle section if you need more
  12. When it looks how you want, click Done

You can test out your stripes by drawing a shape and apply the new pattern swatch.
