Question

Dialog boxes close as if Return key was pressed

I've had this problem for a while in both Illustrator CS6 and CC15: at random times, the dialog box will close as if the Return key was pressed.

Any time a secondary dialog appears, such as when doing a Save As, deleting layers that have artwork on them, saving as PDF, or trying to close without saving changes, sometimes the dialog will close by itself with the default option selected as if I'd hit Return, other times it doesn't.

Any idea why is this happening?

Thank you - in most instances the dialog never appears and we go straight to the next one after a very brief pause. Very occasionally the dialog flashes quickly. This usually tends to happen the first time I launch the program, but can happen after that as well.

I do use a bluetooth Magic Mouse, but the keyboard is USB.

Hello, thank you.

No, the screen sharing is only active when I log in remotely. System prefs, "enable screen sharing" is running, but it's been running for years without this problem. I connect through command-K and a VNC address from my home machine.

Nothing is connected to the internet any more than anything anyone else probably has running. Maybe I have a browser open, maybe not, depending on what job I'm working on. Creative Cloud and Dropbox are always connected.

Does the dialog box get closed immediately after it opens? If not, is there a predictable amount of time between when it appears and when it closes, or does it occur at a predictable time against your system clock?

Do you have a bluetooth keyboard for this computer that's connected to this computer somewhere and wasn't turned off?

Thank you all for the help, I've been observing the behavior since the last post before the holidays. It happens even when I am remotely accessing my work computer through Screen Sharing, so it couldn't be the keyboard. It also happened when I swapped other keyboards as well.

There are no keyboard-enhancing programs installed.

No Wacom anything installed.

I just quit and relaunched Illustrator with Activity Monitor running, did a test save to PDF and it happened again. Exported a second time and it was OK (which is usual behavior). I don't know what I would see in Activity Monitor that would clue me in.

Is this screen sharing app running all the time?

Or any other app that has internet connection?

Which system?

Any additional input hardware connected? Are its drivers compatible?

Any third party plugins installed?

Does the same happen when you connect a different keyboard?

Does that also happen in other apps?

Has it ever worked?

Which other apps are running? And that includes: browsers, e-mail, antivirus ...

Thanks for responding, here's what I have going on.

OSX 10.9.5

Does not happen in any other apps. No stuck return key in apps like Word or Excel ever happens.

The only plug-in would be WorldTools.

Happens whether any other apps are running or not but I could have any of the other CC apps going, plus Mail and maybe a browser or not.

Will have to try with a different keyboard.

This started happening sometime this year, but it was happening before I upgraded to OSX 10.

WorldTools is an InDesign plugin. Is it also available for Illustrator?

Plugins can cause this. Particularly when they have something to do with input. So can you uninstall it to test whether it's the issue?
