In most cases, this is a keyboard mishit for a nearby keystroke shortcut that seemingly failed to work, and your failing to realize that something else may have happened, then just trying again and getting it right and forgetting about it; the most likely one may be Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+G for Ungroup.

 

Ctrl/Cmd+H is probably the most frequent keyboard mishit of all, completely surrounded by other keyboard shorcuts, closing in on all sides.

Do you mean the display of the guides or the display in the rulers or in the palettes or in the control bar?

 

If smart guides, then check your view menu.
