Direction handles are not showing

Hi, I drew a shape with the pen tool.  I switched to the direct selection tool, clicked an anchor but the direction handles aren't showing up.  I checked and the bounding box is checked  under the view menu.

    Are you sure that they are smooth (curved) points? Corner (straight) points will not have direction handles.

    that would be the problem.  I thought you had directional lines using any of the pen's options. 

    Also, if you make a path with the pen tool you can turn it into a selection, right?

    You do unless the anchor point is a corner (as Bill mentioned) or unless you have "Hide Edges" turned on (toggle using Cmd/Alt+H).
