distribute line segments over a lenght of line

I'd like to evenly distribute 4 horizontal line segments over the length of a vertical line. How can I achieve this? (I tried setting the align option to "key object" and then applying "vertical distribute center" but that didn't seem to work immediately.) Any ideas?

Try putting the first and last small segment at the place you want them.

Then select all the small segments (leave the long line alone) and do the Vertical Distribute Space.
