document raster effects settings not being honored on all affected objects

Illustrator 30.1 on MacOS 14.6.1

I recently had to process some ai-maps with drop shadows that were placed in Indesign.

Their resolution was flagged as insufficient so I changed the document raster effects settings accordingly.

But the changed settings were not applied to all objects that had Drop Shadows applied so I manually confirmed the settings to force an update (which was bothersome due to the number of elements).

Does anyone have an idea what I may have been overlooking?

Is there a way to force an update of all Effects in an Illustrator file?

Thanks in advance for any insights,

Pfaffenbichler

Another strange behaviour is the automatic selection of objects after changing the Document Raster Effects Settings.

Some object do not change (in this case remain at 30 ppi) but others do change and get selected.

Thank you all!

@Anubhav M , I cannot share the files because they are a customer’s.

@Kurt Gold , sounds just like my problem.

The screenshots show what happens when I change the Document Raster Effects Resolution setting – part of the effects are not updated at the correct resolution, editing the effect causes an update.

(Edit: In the last screenshot the differing resolution of the top left square’s Drop Shadow should be clearly noticeable.)

Good observation!

I hadn’t noticed that.

I wonder if this might hint at the actual resolution of the effect raster elements being connected to the creation/editing history.

There is certainly something wrong with the updating of effects when the raster effects setting is changed.

Most of the time it does not update the drop shadow, sometimes a single object is updated but others aren't.

Sometimes it updates, but the next time it does not.

It does not seem a new unreliable behaviour because it is reproducable in older versions.

Carl,

probably you detected another serious bug in (one of) the latest Illustrator versions, but I'm not quite sure if you mean the same issue as me.

Here is a simple test that explains what I mean (in Illustrator 30.1):

- In a new document open the Document Raster Effects Settings dialog and set the resolution to a low value (30 ppi).

- Draw a yellow filled circle and apply a Drop Shadow effect to that circle.

- Deselect the circle.

- Open the Document Raster Effects Settings dialog and change the resolution to a higher value (600 ppi).

In older versions of Illustrator, the new setting would be recognised and updated immediately.

Unfortunately, in Illustrator 30.1 it does not get updated automatically, that is, the resolution of the Drop Shadow effect is still set to 30 ppi (you can see and verify it by expanding the circle's appearance).

To update to the higher value, one can hide and immediately show the effect instance in the Appearance panel. Or you can slightly scale or rotate the circle.

This is a fatal bug and it may get even worse if the live effect objects are encapsulated in a symbol or an envelope.

Are you talking about the same issue, Carl? Or is it something else?
