I think most software is going the cloud route.

Which makes sense.  So many people abused software in the past by having hacked copies... thus from a business standpoint, cloud subscription makes sense.  From a consumer view... you benefit.  You get all the updates as soon as they are released.  No waiting.  This is great.  Online downloads allow developers to release more updates quickly.  This means you get the latest patch and fixes as soon as they come out.

I would even expect other industries such as the games industry to become more and more cloud-based.  I think we are slowly coming to the end of the run for CDs and DVDs.

Yea, but I don't need every update. I have CS6. Apparently I bought it just before the cloud. It's great and I don't have to keep paying into it. I can keep it for years.  Adobe and most of the more high-end software companies had learned how to minimize their losses by the way they were forcing users to go through hoops to get it installed.  I want a fixed price and I want it to last for years. I don't have the money cash cow where I can just subscribe on a regular basis, and besides that I don't use it regularly.  I need the software, but it's more of on a rare occasion. Not only that, I live in Hungary and our salaries are too low to be adding on extra expenses that go on forever. DVDs work better - I want tangible objects I can hold in my hand. Just today I was told by a partner about how many problems he has with the cloud service. He needs it, I suppose, but I don't.

" Just today I was told by a partner about how many problems he has with the cloud service."

Just so it's clear, technically, the application install, albeit a download as opposed to physical media, is not "cloud service." The program files are resident on your computer, and run independently of "the cloud."

"I have CS6. I can keep it for years."

Yes, with a perpetual CS6 license, you can do that, but it is already incompatible with the newest OS versions. Colleagues and service providers with Creative Cloud subscriptions are already over a dozen releases removed from CS6, using important newer features that are not backward compatible.

So, if you operate completely alone, in a self-contained workflow, and you're willing to keep a computer running an outdated OS, you can indeed run CS6 indefinitely. I'm not making an argument against that; I'm just helping you truly understand CS6's relative position in the world.
