Drag & create a single rectangle, actually creates a gazillion rectangles

WHY does the rectangle tool do this on my machine?!

I had this once. Restarting the PC solved it.

That' can be done when you drag with the tilde key ~ down. Check if it is stuck, if not, restarting your machine may help.
