Draw inside behaving as clipping mask instead of normally?

Hi guys. Not having a very good illustrator learning day today hahaha.

Issue: the object you are drawing inside becomes invisible when you draw inside it - maybe I clicked a keybind I didn't know about or something?

Then copy the freeform gradient to a simple shape and put it into the mask as well. And the other objects on top of it.

That'a a freeform gradient on that shape, right?

Try with a uniform fill.

uniform works fine. i want the freeform gradient though so im not sure what to do xDD
