Draw inside disabled

I drew a path with my brush and filled it with the live paint bucket. Now, there are two paths that can be separately selected with the direct selection tool. But I can't "draw inside" with neither both selected nor with each selected. I also tried merging them, expanding and joining. It still doesn't work
