Draw inside disabled

So I'm trying to paint highlights and shadows onto my text. I want to use the draw inside feature but it is not available (as shown). I am thinking it's because I used the envelope distort feature to create my text? Is there a way I can fix this or is there a more effective way to add highlights to the type? (I'm new to all things adobe!) thanks!
