Drawing a rectangle creates many copies

I have just started to experience this issue on both my mac at work and at home. When I draw a rectangle it creates what appears to be 100's of copies. It cannot be a stuck key as I am experiencing the same issue on differennt macs. I was using Ai 27.7 but an update to 27.8 does not resolve the issue. See screen shot attached.
