drop shadow issues

I'm having issues with placing text with a drop shadow over the top of a vector object. The shadow looks fine when its sitting on the artboard on its own but as soon as I move it over a shape the shadow goes all dark and blotchy. I have also noticed that I have 2 opacity tabs that appear linked under the fill section of my appearance panel which I cant seem to do anything with, and this defaults into every new document I create. Any ideas on how to get rid of the second opacity tab as i think that's where the issue is?

As suggested, check the Raster Effects settings.

Try, to see if it is a preview problem, to switch from GPU to CPU preview: Cmd E (Mac) or Ctrl E (Win).

The Opacity items in the Appearance Panel: There are Opacity settings to control the opacity of individual fills and strokes and at the bottom another to control the opacity of the entire object.
