Edges hiding when using the Pencil Tool

Hi, I wanted to edit some letters using the Pencil Tool, but whenever I click with the left mouse button and start drawing, I can’t see any line following the Pencil Tool. Also, the edges/paths of the letters disappear, so I never know exactly where I’m drawing.

In the following tutorial, for example at 20:17, you can see that when he uses the tool, a line is drawn and the blue boxes/edges of the letter remain visible the whole time.

"Show Edges" is already enabled.

Yes, it's on. Here another video:

That's not how it works.

Usually it happens when path is selected and pencil is active in Edit mode. You can control it from Pencil settings by increasing the distance for editing, The asterisks near the pencil tool indicate that you will draw a new line. If asterisk is off that indicate the editing mode.

I’ve solved the initial problem, and now a line appears when drawing. However, I’m facing a new issue:

In the videos, the Pencil Tool is used to remove or cut out specific parts of the text. But when I use it, it just creates a new vector shape based on what I draw, instead of subtracting from the existing text.

Is Edit Selected Paths turned on? And are you within the radius?
