Edit or replace scatter brush or pattern brush artwork?

Question

Is it possible to edit or replace the artwork that makes up a scatter brush or pattern brush? Or must each brush be made from scratch?

For example:

You create a scatter brush from a simple star shape and fine tune all the options (size, spacing scatter, rotation, colorization).

Now you want a heart shape brush with the same properties.

Press Alt and drag the new artwork into the brush panel over the existing brush

Yes, drag the brush from the Brushes panel. modify it an drag the entire brush back on top of the old one with the Alt key depressed.
