Edit Pattern menu item grayed out after Save

I was working in Edit Pattern mode with no problems, until I saved the file and tried to continue editing the pattern, but now that menu item (Object > Pattern > Edit Pattern) is grayed out, as is the entire Edit Pattern Mode panel. Does anyone know what might have gone wrong and how I can fix it? Thank you!

    Your pattern is in the swatches panel. Just double click on it and it will open in the pattern editing mode.
