Editing a single corner of a line

Hey,

This is my first time on the forums.  Been using Illustrator and Photoshop for about a year and usually find anything I need via YouTube tutorials, but couldn't find an answer to this.

I'm trying to create artwork for a t-shirt that has a line between two words.  With the line, I want to break it and angle off two corners.  They basically should fit together like a puzzle piece if you brought them together.

Is there an easy way to do this?  Should I not be using the line tool at all?  Perhaps I should be using the rectangle tool and trying to edit a corner?  I've tried a few things, but can't seem to get it to look right.  Any insight on this would be great.  Thanks!

    You need to turn the line into a shape. (Object > Path > Outline stroke)

    Or just draw a rectangle from the beginning

    Then you can use another shape to cut your rectangle

    BB,

    As I (mis)understand it, you may:

    1) Create the line as a long rectangle in either colour;

    2) Create a slanting rectangle covering 1) like the desired cutout;

    3) Select both and Pathfinder>Minus front;

    4) Direct Select and change the colour of one of the parts as desired (they form a Group).
