Editing text colors

Beginner problem here. I was following a tutorial on how to make this cartoony text and was wondering how I could have 2 seperate colors for different parts of the texts. I've attached a screen shot.

That looks like a gradient.

To apply that to a text, you need to select the text with the selection tool, then in the Appearance panel createa new fill for the text and then apply the gradient to that.

I dont think I explained it properly. I was wondering how to apply a different gradient to another part of the text. for instancee, one colour for 'net' and another for 'king'.

You absolutely need that as a graphic tyle/text effect?

Text would need to be editable?
