Editing text looses formatting

Suddenly my Illustrator changed it's behaviour and I don't seem to find the solution.

A have a text box (live or regular) and let's say it's text is arial. If I click to edit the text and add/replace some of it the new letters come in a different formatting - they don't keep the text's box formatting.

Any clues?

Thank you.

Disabling: Preferences > Type > Enable Missing Glyph Protection did the job.

All seems OK now.

Thank you! That was exactly what fixed it for me. That was really annoying me.
