Hendy,

If you simply wish to have hollow black letters, you can use the Appearance palette and set the Fill to None, then Add a Stroke with the desired Stroke Weight.

But undoubtedly Ton had it right.

You could use the classic 3D effect, rotate the result, expand the appearance and remove/modify the lines.
