envelope distort make with top object

I used image trace to create a silhouette of this frog. I expanded it, then divvied it up with lines like so. I then used envelope distort, make with top object to fit these expanded letterforms into the shapes. However the last shape did not work. I am pretty sure this is a single path object, since there seem to be no trace of anything extra. Would anyone know why this error is occurring?
