Eraser Tool in Pattern Make mode

I’m trying to build a complex, abstract pattern from simple paths in Illustrator 2023. I’m using the Object ➔ Pattern ➔ Make mode, which is incredibly helpful, but there are limitations to what can be done with it.

One of the most frustrating for me is that the Eraser Tool appears to be disabled.

If I try to use it in a pattern, the cursor changes to the “Cannot erase” indicator (pencil + circle with a line through it).

If I copy my objects out of Pattern Make into another document, I can erase normally. I can use this to build what I need, but it’s extremely tedious and time-consuming. I wonder if I’m missing something that would allow me to use the Eraser while making patterns?

Has anyone else found a way around this limitation? Also, consider this a feature request. Thanks!
