Why can't I hide the ORIGINAL PHOTO layer to see the progress of the black and white vectorization?

Here it goes

- I PLACE THE PHOTO TO BE VECTORIZED ON A LETTER SIZE DOCUMENT
- DUPLICATE THE ORIGINAL LAYER AND LOCK IT
- I STARTED WORKING WITH DE DUPLICATED LAYER DRAWING THE OUTLINE OF THE
PIC, USING THE PEN TOOL
- YOU HAVE TO DO THE SAME WITH ALL THE PARTS OF THE PIC, IN MY CASE
EYES, NOSE, EYE LASHES, EARS, ETC., EACH ON IN A DIFFERENT LAYER
- DURING THE PROCESS YOU CAN VIEW YOUR PROGRESS HIDING THE ORIGINAL
LAYER, BEING ABLE TO SEE ONLY THE OUTLINE ( THIS IS THE STEP THAT IS NOT
WORKING PROPERLY)
- I WILL SEND A SCREENSHOT OF A WORK I MADE PREVIOUSLY

Then, you will be able to color to the different parts to obtain a result
shown in the second attachment.

I tried another photo and I'm having the problem mentioned above.

So you are following a tutorial and things are not working as expected? Exactly what are you doing to hide the object? What does happen instead?

I already know how it works. Instead duplicating layers, you have to create mew ones and draw each part of the vectorization on each of these layersThe original layer must be visible but locked.

Can you please describe step by step what you are trying to do?
