Error: File is already opened and has unsaved changes. while opening file in Illustrator 2021 on mac

In Illustrator, I keep getting this error message "File is already opened and has unsaved changes. Do you wish to continue place operation?" when I try to open some files. I have tried uninstalling/ reinstalling Illustrator, restarting my computer, renaming the files, downloading the original files (with different file names) and working with those.. nothing is working. I can't find any threads with this issue that has been answered. There are no files opened anywhere.

Using a Mac, OS Catalina 10.15.7

Illustrator 2021, just made sure it was up to date in Creative Cloud

Files are saved as PDF's- the originals and the one's I created.... different file names.

I don't understand why a file is asking for a link that has never been associated with it.

Help!

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble you are facing. I would request you to share a few more details like:

  • The exact version of Illustrator
  • Does this happen while opening a specific document? Could you please share a sample document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link.
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, or web extensions installed recently.

Also, please try booting the system into Safe Mode (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/x-productkb/global/start-safe-boot-mode-mac.html) and Hidden Root account (https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/directory-utility/dirub32398f1/mac). Let us know how it goes.

Thanks & Regards,

Hello,

It's Illustrator 25.4.1.

It happens when opening a specific set of documents. I cannot upload the files as they are copyrighted. I have files that I worked on and named Box Design-16 for example and it required a linked file. I tried to open it after deleting the old file and it asked to relink it. So I went back and pulled the old files that never required anything to be linked. These files are asking for the same link even though they are from the original source and have a different file name. This happens whenever I try to open Box Design-16, Box Design-17, Box Design-18, Box Design-16 with die, etc... the only thing consistent is that they are the same image. I received files from our latest printer and they are asking for the same link even though they were sent to the printer before I made my changes so they have original files too.

It started happening today. No changes to anything.

I'll try the Safe Mode and Hidden Root suggestions.

Thank you for sharing the details.

Could you please confirm if you are using network drives or servers and working in collaboration. If yes, Please check if someone is not working on the same file or it is not renamed or moved to another folder by someone. Also, try copying all the linked files & assets offline on your system HDD. Then re-link them all and see how it goes.

I will be looking forward to your response.
