Esc key not working at all in Illustrator

The escape key is not working at all in Illstrator for me suddenly. It works everywhere else outside of Illustrator, but inside of Illustrator it's not working as deselct or exiting isolation mode or anything else--it does nothing at all. I've tried multiple keyboards, I've tried restarting Illustrator, reseting the preferences, restarting my computer, updating the app, updating my computer, and nothing is working. I also tried the tips in this forum here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/esc-key-not-working/m-p/9899877#:~:text=Go%20into%20Illustrator%20%3E%20Preferences%20%3E%20General,in)%20and%20press%20%22OK%22

That didn't work for me.

I'm running on a 2021 MacBook Pro, macOS Sonoma 14.0 if that information is helpful. Illustrator has been updated to 28.0.

Hi @Linzi31067344971x,

I appreciate your thorough troubleshooting steps. Since the issue persists, let's try a few more:

  • Safe Mode: It's great that you tried multiple keyboards. Could you please check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode on your Mac? This will help us determine if any third-party software or conflicting drivers are causing the problem.
  • Locale: Sometimes, using a non-English version of macOS or Illustrator might lead to unexpected issues. Would you mind confirming if both macOS & Illustrator are English versions?
  • Create a new admin user on your MacBook Pro and test Illustrator in that user account. This can help identify if the problem is specific to your user profile.
  • Accessibility Settings: Also, check your Mac's accessibility settings to make sure nothing is remapping or interfering with the Escape key.

Please try these additional steps and let me know if any of them help or if the issue persists. This will assist us in narrowing down the problem. Thank you for your patience.

Best,

Anshul Saini
