Question

EVEN COLUMNS IN PARAGRAPH TEXT

I can't seem to create even depth columns of text. Can this be done in AI at all?

In Freehand you can simply click adjust leading and it evens all the columns out across the bottom.

As Doug already pointed out, currently Illustrator does not offer a Balance Columns option (like InDesign or FreeHand).

It is however pretty easy to use a text wrap to get the desired behaviour (see Object menu).

Anna's suggestion may sometimes be suitable, but I don't think that this is what you are looking for.

do you mean distributing the text in the text area from top to bottom evenly? Honestly, the best soft for text working is certainly InDesign, but you can do this thing in AI also. Use Type > Area Type Options, Align Horizontal > Justify.
This command does not have a shortcut by default but you can set it by yourself.

No, you'd best use InDesign if you want that kind of functionality.

You still have a functioning copy of Freehand?
