Exclude Object from Smart Guides

How can I tell the Smart Guides system to exclude an ojbect from consideration for snapping when dragging another object? I have a complex piece of vector art (an embedded SVG file) within an infographic-style design which is interferring with alignment between other objects when using Smart Guides. I would like the complex object to be excluded from Smart Guides. Is this possible without workarounds such as hiding the object?

Agreed. At least basically. It may be a good feature request.

Smart guides can be pretty (over-)talkative sometimes.

However, from a technical point of view I'm not sure how to implement such exclusions. Perhaps some kind of advanced Isolation mode ...

I'm not sure why you'd consider it an undesirable "workaround," but you do seem to be aware that Smart Guides only key on objects that are in view.

So that offers several options:

  • Hide the object (select the object and choose Object > Hide > Selection)
  • Place the object on its own layer and temporarily hide the layer by clicking its eye icon in the Layers panel
  • Zoom in far enough that the object is outside the view port (off the screen)

And of course there's always the option of toggling Smart Guides off (Ctrl/Cmd+U) and using the alignment buttons on the Control bar or the Align panel.

I'm not sure this is possible currently. Try adding to this request...
