Expand appearance not working for 3d type

I am trying to recreate an old vintage postcard and need the text to expand so I can color the 3D parts of the type different colors and add pictures to the front faces of the letters. When I click expand appearance and then try to direct select the base of the M (for example), it only lets me select "Maine as a whole". Any help is appreciated !
